St. Thomas, 13 miles long and some 3 miles wide, combines the natural beauty of a tropical island with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its lovely harbor at Charlotte Amalie is the most visited port in the Caribbean for cruise ships.
In the 1700’s St. Thomas was a haven for pirates such as Captain Kidd and Blackbeard who preyed on galleons carrying the gold and silver of the New World to Spain.
Settled by Denmark, St. Thomas was a prosperous sugar island, at one time having 170 thriving plantations. In 1917 it was purchased with St. Croix and St. John by the United States.
Visitors are drawn to its duty-free shopping, elegant dining, and exciting nightlife. Its bays, such as magnificent Magens Bay, and beaches are ideal for snorkeling, swimming, diving, and sailing.
