St. John Some two-thirds of St. John’s 22 sq miles is a U.S. National Park thanks to a donation by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956. Consequently, St. John today retains a tranquil unspoiled beauty that makes it one of the most pristine islands in the Caribbean.
Settled in the 1700’s by Denmark, it prospered as a sugar island. Today the ruins of the great plantation houses such as Annaberg Sugar Plantation attest to the grandeur of its society at that time. St. John with its sister islands, St. Thomas and St. Croix, were purchased from Denmark by the U.S. in 1917.
Tropical vegetation in St. John covers most of the island which is fringed with white sand beaches and crystal waters making it ideal for swimming, diving, snorkeling, or sailing. Trunk Bay, Hawksnest Bay, and Cinnamon Bay are examples of the superb beaches among the many found here. The capital of Cruz Bay contains excellent restaurants and colorful shops.
For those seeing spectacular natural beauty and tranquility, St. John is the perfect selection.
