In 1776 a brig-of-war flying a new flag entered the harbor of St. Eustatius and was duly saluted by the cannons of the fort, thus making the island the first foreign power to recognize the new American nation. A neutral state, St. Eustatius became a major port for the transshipment of arms, food, and clothing to the American colonists blockaded by the Royal Navy.
Today Statia as it is popularly known, is a leader in eco-tourism and is striving to protect the marine and land environment and its endangered species. The island has 18 varieties of orchids and 25 species of birds including White-tailed Tropic Birds that nest on the cliffs along the beach.
A key initiative is the St. Eustatius Marine Park opened in 1998. The park has numerous dive sites ranging from coral reefs, drop-offs, canyons, and recent and historical wrecks.
In addition to its superb diving, Statia offers excellent hiking and climbing opportunities on its two dormant volcanoes maintained by the park service.
