Puerto Rico

The Spanish culture of Puerto Rico was established when Ponce de Leon made the first settlement in 1508. Spain managed to keep possession of the island until defeated in the Spanish-American War when it passed in 1899 to United States sovereignty. Today it elects its own government in association with the United States.

The narrow cobble stoned streets of Old San Juan reflect the architectural heritage of the city with its numerous forts, churches, museums, and plazas. Here in Old San Juan is the great El Morro Fortress that Spain constructed from 1539 to 1586. Covering some 200 acres and towering 145 feet above the Atlantic, this colonial bastion remained impregnable against pirates, privateers, and foreign navies.

For swimming and water sports, palm-shaded Luguillo Beach is famous for its calm crystal water fringed by a coral reef. Also popular for its beaches is the island of Vieques located 11 miles offshore and Culebra Island which can be reached by a short ferry ride.

El Yunque Rain Forest and Bird Sanctuary transports you into a mysterious world of giant ferns, exotic vines and orchids, cool waterfalls, and colorful parrots.

Driving through the interior of the island, you will pass vast fields of swaying sugar cane and pineapples as well as citrus groves and other fruits .

Puerto Rico is a paradise for golfers, having a choice of championship courses including the new River Course at Rio Mar Beach designed by Greg Norman.

From pulsating San Juan to the tranquility of its beaches and forests, Puerto Rico is a destination that will fulfill the wishes of any traveler.

A host of fine hotels and restaurants assures comfortable accommodations and excellent local and international cuisine.
