Grenada British since 1783, Grenada was first sighted by Columbus in 1498 but colonization was delayed by the fierce resistance of the Carib Indians. The island achieved complete independence in 1974 and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1983, fearing a Communist takeover, the U.S. invaded the country and restored democratic government.
Today Grenada is a quiet and comfortable retreat for vacationers. The most southerly of the Windwards, it has black and white sand beaches, mountains, lovely harbors, and what many consider to be the most enchantingly picturesque port in the Caribbean its capital St. George’s. Here pastel buildings and gabled houses lie along the shore of a blue lagoon against a backdrop of hills.
The interior of the island is spectacular with volcanic craters filled with azure water, cascading waterfalls, and pools surrounded by lush tropical flora. Grenada is a major producer of nutmeg and cocoa and often called The Spice Island.
Grenada’s long white beaches and crystal waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. A host of hotels and restaurants provide fine accommodations and cuisine to please the most discriminating traveler.
