Dominica At the top of the British Windwards, mountainous and verdant Dominica is without a doubt one of the most beautiful islands to be found in the West Indies. It highest peak, Morne Diablotin (4747 ft.), and others cause it to be called The Switzerland of the Caribbean.

First sighted by Columbus in 1493, both the English and the French attempted early settlements but were thwarted by the Carib Indians. In 1815 the British gained the island by treaty. Dominica gained full independence in 1978 and is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Agriculture is important and Dominica’s fertile soil produces citrus crops, bananas, and coconuts among others. Today tourism is growing rapidly with Dominica being a favorite with botanists who enjoy the vast stands of bamboo, mahogany, ferns and palms. Hiking and mountain climbing, fresh-water swimming, and fishing are popular sports.

Dominica has comfortable accommodations and excellent cuisine including local specialties such as crayfish and frog.
