The second largest of the ABC islands Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao which comprise the Netherlands Antilles, Bonaire is known for its crystal clear waters and reefs teeming with multicolored tropical fish. So many divers are drawn here that diving is now its most important market.
The island is also a popular destination for ornithologists with some 130 species of birds residing in Bonaire, including the thousands of pink flamingos which nest here. The government has recently purchased the uninhabited island of Kleine Bonaire, a favorite with scuba divers and underwater photographers, with the intention of making it into a nation park. Numerous hotels and restaurants assure the visitor of excellent accommodations and a variety of local and international cuisine.
